A History of the Women’s Surface Creek Saddle Club

The Women’s Surface Creek Saddle Club was started in 1959 by a group of women whose husbands were busy playing Cowboy Polo. The women wanted a fun thing to do so they formed a drill team on horseback and performed during the Cowboy Polo half times.

With the donation of some land where the present day arena is, the group became more formal and the Surface Creek Saddle Club, Inc. came into being. The group was organized into three parts: Men’s Group, Women’s Group and the Cedaredge Teens.

The Women’s group grew into a trail riding and parade performing club, now known as the Women’s Surface Creek Saddle Club with independent by-laws and
budget but still a member organization of the corporation. The “men’s group” evolved over the years to include women members and a number of years ago started running gymkhanas. The stands, shuts, etc at the arena were built and maintained by the Festival Organization of Cedaredge with volunteers and contributions from the Saddle Clubs. This organization sponsored the Little Britches rodeo each year at the SCSC Inc. arena. Several years ago Little Britches was discontinued at the arena.

In the early sixties the WSCSC built the concession stand at the arena and for many years ran the food services for Little Britches, gymkhanas and other rodeo
events.

The Covid 19 pandemic forced cancellation of most of the clubs events in 2020 and 2021. The club was at a crossroad and Spring of 2022 the club gave itself a
much needed Facelift. The officers and key members developed a 2022 events schedule, including parades, new trail rides, two overnight campouts, Moonlight Rides, Halloween Costume Ride, Ladies Night Out, Christmas Party and Educational Programs at every monthly meeting. A Ride Committee was formed in early April. The committee developed a riding scheme for all levels of Trails through out the Delta, Montrose and Mesa counties. Safe and Enjoyable Trail Riding with New Trails became the theme for The Facelift. They adopted the downhill Ski Trail identification, Green for Easy Trails, Blue for Intermediate Trails and Black for Difficult Trails.

Over the years the WSCSC members have seen most of Delta County from horseback. We have maintained many trails, enjoyed family dinners, donated to worthy causes, ridden in many parades, cooked many hamburgers and participated in overnight camp outs with our favorite friends and equines. In addition to helping with gymkhanas we have organized Trail Ride clinics and Trail Trials competitions. We have sponsored a competitive trail ride of the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) on the Grand Mesa since 2000. Attracting riders from different states.

Our steeds represent many different breeds of horses as well as donkey’s and mules. Our interests range from trail riding through reining and into dressage
and driving.
